Cyclical

Listening today
under nature's tapestry
I sit quietly
to catch autumn's last whisper
voiced in papery red leaves

The path underfoot
holds their laminous stories
left behind until spring
when we pull back the pages
worn thin by winter's thick glaze

Deer tread the meadows
summer's birdsong now silenced
Wild geese preen feathers
and prepare for winter's flight
slip away with early night

I wrote this poem for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt at the Skeptic’s Kaddish. This week’s W3 prompt idea comes from Melissa at Mom with a Blog. She asks us to do the following:

  • Compose a series of three tanka;
    • Following are three “turn lines” or “pivots” (third lines) for each of three tanka, and you must construct the rest:
      1. Turn / Pivot for tanka #1: “I sit quietly”
      2. Turn / Pivot for tanka #2: “Left behind till spring”
      3. Turn / Pivot for tanka #3: “Wild geese preen feathers”
    • These tanka are to be autumn/winter-themed;
    • You may write each of your tanka in a single unbroken line of thirty-one syllables, or you may use the five-line 5/7/5/7/7 approach.

    Gorgeous, Sarah. I love how you added other animals into this verse to make the pivot line flow as you did.

    Much love,
    David
