Sunshine Kayak

under glistening sunlight, 
we won't look back,
for our sister's river trip
we can't fail to pack:
three children's lifejackets,
plus spares for the cousins,
the little blue cooler
with its bag of crushed ice,
cherry tomatoes from the garden,
and all that beef jerky,
cucumbers, 
cheese,
and our favorite summer sausage,
way too much water,
and not enough beer,
SPF 60 for mom,
but SPF 30 for the rest,
a sweatshirt,
a swimsuit,
my least favorite sunglasses,
and everyone's favorite hat,
the "healthy" bug spray-- 
with the forest green label--
and the other bug spray 
(that actually works),
flip-flops,
the paddles,
maybe a bandana,
and, of course,
extra clothes in case we fall in.

I wrote this poem for the Wea’ve Written Weekly challenge #124 at the Skeptic’s Kaddish in which Lynn asks us to do the following:

  • PROMPT: Compose a ‘list poem’, which includes the word ‘fall’ or some form of it (falling, fallen, fell, etc.).

List poem?

A list poem is a deliberately organized poem containing a list of images or adjectives that build up to describe the poem’s subject matter through an inventory of things.

Spoiler alert: almost everyone fell in. Except Mom and Dad. 😁🙌
