Waiting on St. Nick

'twas the night before Christmas
and all through the house,
not a creature was stirring, 
except all three of my kids
because they were too excited,
thoughts of presents dancing
in their sweet, little skulls...

and my husband was up, too, 
eating up the Ghirardelli chocolate 
I'd bought for the mail carrier-- 
oops, I guess she'll be getting some of these mocha peanut butter cookies we made for the neighbors...

I'll be up all night, too,
since the cookie recipe was British,
and I miscalculated the amount of instant coffee to add;
now three cookies in, with a sugar plum dance to my step, I ponder why we don't just use the metric system 
like everyone else...
