Hints of nutmeg and chocolate whisper across the room, warming up the morning gloom, wafting slowly, the
aromas bloom. The cup I poured
casts a satisfying warmth,
the delectable mocha I adore.
Eyes closed with expectation,
a mug wrapped in anticipation.
Then, my joy crushed by squealing surprise:
a critter slurps the treat before my eyes!

I wrote this poem for Wea’ve Written Weekly, prompt #191. This week’s prompt was provided by Nolcha, who asks us to do the following:
Let’s send 2025 off with a giggle!
Write a poem of 10 lines or fewer that places someone—or something—in a delightfully improbable location. Think sharks in a bathtub, a dragon in a bar, or any unexpected presence where it clearly doesn’t belong.
Surprise us. Amuse us.
Happy writing!
Fortunately, I’ve never had a chipmunk in my coffee cup. Though, while camping, I have experienced a few unsavory bugs sneaking into my coffee. That’s definitely never a welcome surprise, if slightly comical. 😜 I wonder what other animals would think about the taste of coffee. Would chipmunks appreciate the heavenly goodness of a mocha latte? We may never know…

Thanks for the afternoon smile!

Sarah, your poem reminds me of the time I found a mouse in my corn flakes! I poured from the box and the mouse tipped out. 🤭

Oh, no! Those mice will find anywhere to sneak into.

shared this poem with my mom as I continue my visit, she said most rodents don’t have an appreciation for coffee grounds, when you put grounds in your garden & helps the garden grow so no worries & provides acidity to your plants.

Oh yes, good point! We put coffee grounds in our garden this past year, and I think it was helpful. Starbucks gives out big bags of them for free, and I saved some from our own kitchen, too.

Sarah, this is perfect!! I’ve never had a chipmunk in my cocoa but I’ve had a squirrel in my toilet!!

It is a funny story but too long to tell in a comment… Perhaps I’ll retell it some time!

Sarah — this totally made me smile. I was easing into the cozy vibe and then that chipmunk ambush cracked me up.
