the water's surface,
like a mirror,
collects our thoughts and
reflects the secrets in our eyes
I wrote this poem for the week’s Wea’ve Written Weekly, hosted by David at the Skeptic’s Kaddish. The Poet of the Week and provider of our lovely prompt is Reena.
Form: Naani Poem
Naani is one of India’s most popular Telugu poems. Naani means an expression of one and all. It consists of 4 lines, consisting of 20 to 25 syllables. This form is not bound to a particular subject.
Guidelines:
You may choose either the image above or the naani poetry form or both to inspire your piece.

This is my first experience reading or writing a Naani poem, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. When I read that it was a Telugu poem, it reminded me of my favorite Telugu actor, who is also Nani (I’m sure the pronunciation and meaning are different, but I tragically do not speak Telugu). My husband’s interest in foreign films initially led us to explore all the –ollywoods of India, or at least what we can access through Prime Video, Hulu, and our South Asian friends. If I’m watching a Tollywood movie, 8 times out of 10 it is a film starting Nani. I might have a tiny celebrity crush but look at that dazzling smile. Who wouldn’t want to be the damsel in distress? 😍😅

Sarah, your Naani poem is absolutely enchanting! The imagery of the water’s surface as a mirror, collecting thoughts and reflecting secrets, is beautifully evocative.

Thank you! It is a powerful mirror. I was inspired by the mysterious glimmer I spot in my youngest son’s eye just before he does something extra troublesome 😁
