the river mocks us sometimes
its waves flickering in
and out of light and shadows
like the way you can almost, but not quite, catch the magician's illusion, or a new friend's emotion.
the river laughs at humanity's follies,
the way we trust
when pain is imminent.
the river remains,
even in times of darkness,
and it will remain here
long after we're gone.
I wrote this poem for the #132 Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt at the Skeptic’s Kaddish. This prompt was provided by Sheila, who asks us to write a poem with the following criteria:
- Form:Β AnyΒ poetic form;
- Length:Β ExactlyΒ 64 words;
- Must include:Β the wordsΒ βdarkβΒ andΒ βlightβΒ in any form

βcatch the magician’s illusion, or a new friend’s emotionβ I find this part especially potent and stunning. Things in life which are not quite describable and often inaccessible.

Thank you, Melissa! Definitely! It’s interesting to consider what we pick to conceptualize and what we leave outside of boxes.

Very well done. You capture the power, the inevitability, and the lastingness of the river – and of nature.

Sarah this one is a delight to read – it flows along!! The truth is that our lives are transient and some things in this world seem permanent . However it is an illusion (like the magician’s trick) for even the rivers reimagine their course and can dry up and disappear…. A thought provoking piece! β€

Thank you! Very true. I also find it interesting to think about what nature would be like without the human impact.

Sarah,
I love how you connect shifting light and shadows to human emotion and folly. Itβs a beautiful reflection on how some things endure beyond us.

The earth will outlast us–we are just guests, fleeting as the wind. Beautifully said. (K)
