Sneaking snacks on the back porch,
sneaking jokes under blankets,
we slip away into sweet dreams
as the Northern Lights trace patterns
across our sleeping bags.
This is just a little poem about summertime thoughts. We have an upcoming camping trip that I’m pretty excited about– the urge to watch the sunset over Lake Superior and roast marshmallows over a campfire is simply too powerful to resist this time of year.
We experienced quite the heat wave over the last two days: extreme humidity and temperatures pushing 100 degrees Fahrenheit. We spent time in a relative’s pool and in a nearby lake. Both were filled with kids shouting, splashing, and enjoying life. Adulting can be demanding and stressful at times, but being surrounded with joy-filled children makes it hard to really hold too much of a grudge against the annoyances and stresses of life. (Though, admittedly, it also makes me hope fervently for positive change for the future.)
It’s still hot today, and I haven’t been in the garden in a few days, so that’s next on the agenda. I hope my peppers are enjoying the heatwave. I have to go save my radishes now… 😬

We were by Huron this weekend and it was beastly hot even by the lake! I hope you can enjoy the camping. On the plus side we saw fireflies for the first time this summer!

Ooh, fireflies are always so welcome! So fascinating, too. One year, we saw a couple in a campground bathroom that was missing lights and joked that they hired the fireflies for lighting.

Back in ancient times, during the Nixon presidency there was an energy crisis. People were asked to conserve and there were in places rolling brown-outs. The political cartoon that my mother placed on the refrigerator showed Nixon holding a jar of fireflies saying “Mate darn you, mate!”
