Siren Song

Witches glide

through navy skies

before an incandescent moon.

City lights glisten below,

incantations flow,

capes waving in wind

as an eerie song begins.

Children step from stoops,

hypnotized eyes,

zombified,

marching to witch song.

I wrote this poem in response to the the weekly W3 prompt at The Skeptic’s Kaddish. This week’s prompt poem was “A Sonnet about something or other” by Sunra Rainz, and I selected Sunra’s first prompt option, which was as follows: “Write an ekphrastic poem in response to a horror film that gave you the chills (or a comedy horror).”

“Hocus Pocus” didn’t give me the chills, but it is one of my favorite Halloween movies. Initially, I was tempted to write something about “The Exorcist”, a movie that really did give me the chills (that crabwalk down the stairs– my goodness!), but I decided to pick something less terrifying. I’m not much for scary Halloween movies, but I like the comedic or family-friendly ones. “Shaun of the Dead”, “Warm Bodies”, and “Practical Magic” are probably my other favorites for the season.

  4. I’m so with you, Sarah – the funny horror movies are great! Personally, I don’t find any appeal in being scared just for the sake of being scared – it’s not entertaining for me. Comedy, action, romance, etc., pretty much any genre I find I can potentially enjoy, but horror? Only if it’s especially unique and/or clever.
