Journeying

for the love of adventure,
I'll cross these prairie lands of waving grass and sun-speckled
hollows, the pastures
hidden beyond winding county roads and no-named hillsides,
sleeping under yesterday's roof
and weaving tomorrow from scratch

Oh my goodness, it’s been a few weeks since I’ve written a poem on WordPress! I’ve missed that. This semester has been going really well teaching-wise and, though I haven’t been writing as much, I do feel like I’m managing the other aspects of my life better than I have been since the days of cancer treatment.

I’ve also become a mentor to two different cancer patients who are currently going through treatment, the first of whom I was connected with through The Firefly Sisterhood, a more local breast cancer survivor support group out of the Twin Cities area in Minnesota, and another through a national group called Imerman Angels. I remember receiving a “chemo angel” from another organization when I was going through chemotherapy, and her sweet little messages and letters in the mail meant a lot to me at the time. I’m happy that I can now make a positive impact on others. It makes such an impact to hear from others who have actually been there when you’re going through a difficult and uncertain experience.

I’m still working forward with the larger support group at my local clinic, too, and we should have our first meeting in October. I’m excited! It’s a good season right now. I’m feeling that I’m having many opportunities to be encouraging to others, both through my teaching and now through advocacy, and that’s something that is embedded in the roots of who I am as a person. I’m not sure if this has anything to do with my poem, and though I usually prefer a neat little connection, I think it’s okay today. I hope you all are doing well!

  1. Sara, I am thinking about being a private tutor for all levels of students. How do I go about doing this? I am currently back in substituting teaching. ? Thanks, Fred

    1. I haven’t done any private tutoring before, but that sounds like a good idea. I think you can probably start spreading the word at the schools where you substitute and making business cards or something that you could also leave with people who may be interested in tutoring. I’ve heard from a tutor I came across online that word of mouth was the most common way to get a tutoring business going– having one or two students to start and growing from there. I hope it works out!
