Hot Chocolate’s Embrace

We coast down 
hills fluffy with nature's 
reminiscence. Rays of
sun scramble across
the tree's fragile
limbs. Light scatters tapered
shadows on our hands and
faces despite the 
frigid air.

Warm mugs of cocoa
invigorate us
send a soothing hum
from the first, rich sip
to the final dregs.

I wrote this poem for the W3 prompt from the Skeptic’s Kaddish. Despite the cold weather (5° F/-15° C was the high temperature yesterday 🥶), our family went up to Cub Scout Winter Camp this weekend, which lent me the idea for the poem. Don’t worry, we weren’t actually camping outdoors; we were in a building, though we spent several hours outside– with lots of warm clothing! And we drank lots of hot chocolate.🙂

David provided the prompt this week, and he wrote:

“As many of you know, I have been creating a lot of ‘nonce’ poetic forms together with Sangeetha, my partner in rhyme. This week, I would like us to try our hands at a relatively simple ‘nonce’ poetic form that I created. It is called the ‘Jamb-Jitsu’.

Jamb-Jitsu?

  • Two stanzas (S1 and S2) with three rules:
    1. S1 must have more lines than S2;
    2. ALL lines of S1 must employ enjambment;
      • Enjambment is: the running-over of a sentence or phrase from one poetic line to the next, without terminal punctuation;
    3. ALL lines of S2 must have the same number of syllables“
