Go with the Flow

when I page through memories with you,
water always takes the stage:
a glistening ocean under equatorial sun, a waterfall dive after too much fun, hand-in-hand in the moonlight with toes dipping as stars take flight, muddling through currents with flip-flops on, splashing through the river and my paddle-- gone, hopelessly, helplessly,
happy memories flow by as we float on

I’m so honored to have been chosen as Poet of the Week this week at the Skeptic’s Kaddish, which means I had to come up with the prompt for the 113th Wea’ve Written Weekly challenge. I distinctly remember accidentally choosing an overly complicated prompt the last time I was chosen, so I decided to go in another direction this time around and pick a more open, (hopefully) easier prompt. Here is it:

  • Compose anΒ ekphrastic poemΒ inspired byΒ anyΒ image of a body of water (ocean, waterfall, lake, etc.). The image you select may be a photo you have taken, art you have created, or any other image you like.
  • Include the image with the poem.
  • There are no other requirementsΒ (form, meter, rhyme, etc.) for this prompt – your poem need only be inspired by the image you select.

My husband and I (and our three kiddos) just returned from a camping trip on a lake, and tonight I found myself reminiscing on our many watery adventures over the years. The image above is from a trip just the two of us took to northern Minnesota in October 2021. If you look closely, you can see my husband sitting on the rocky ledge at the edge of the falls.

I’ve had great fun reading all of the submissions so far this week, and now the real challenge will be selecting the next Poet of the Week! Thanks, everyone!

  1. fun and laughter I see/hear in this post. Water is so much more baptismal in the hot summer months. Such a beautiful prompt. Thanks for posting.

With WATER, we’ve got it RIGHT!! πŸ‘πŸ½

      1. Mostly, at this point. He grew up speaking only Tagalog until about age 10 but now only remembers English. Once in a while he will recognize a phrase or word somewhere. We both know some Spanish, and there are some similar words/phrases between Spanish and Tagalog. Ideally, we’d both be fluent in all three; hopefully, someday! πŸ˜€
