I wrote this poem for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt #138 on the Skeptic’s Kaddish, which was provided by Lesley this time around.
Lesley’s prompt guidelines
- Form (choose one):
- More challenging: Double dactyl (1951)
- Less challenging: McWhirtle (1989)
This poem is maybe not truly a Double dactyl 😅 I have to admit that I struggled with this form. I gave it a try, writing it in honor of a book I just finished reading: “This Tender Land”. It was a random book that I’d put on hold at the library with the plan to join in a book club in town that would be reading it in early December.
Of course, life became too crazy, and I hadn’t even opened the first page by the time the book club met, so I considered just returning the book back to the library. Then, I started reading it, and I actually really enjoyed the book. Glad I didn’t immediately return it! 📚

Some of the best books are those that are unexpectedly good! I enjoyed reading your poem 🩷✨ and happy holidays!

Books have to be read in their own time. This actually sounds like a good read, from your poem. Maybe this is the form for book reviews!

I’m not the only one who struggled with the names, I see.😄

This made me smile, Sarah! BTW, I’ve never joined a book club for that reason – that I don’t think I’d be able to keep pace with the group.
Much love,
David

Thanks, David! I am also either wildly behind or ahead of pace when I join a book club. The last time I joined one, I finished the entire book and then read a second one, and the group decided to discuss “just the first half– no spoilers”, so I felt nervous about sharing much of anything because by then I couldn’t remember which events were in the first or second half 😅

I love how you took a character’s name from the book, Tender Lands by William Kent Krueger. I enjoyed your poem (great advert for the book!). Your feature photo is beautiful. Is that you sitting upon the rock? 💕
Thank you so much for participating, Sarah. 🙏
