Where the Seven Rivers Meet

this city that knit our hearts together
rippling under a setting sun
of Kool-Aid colored yarns and heathers
the rivers weaving together to one

under sunlight's gaze we'll stay a while
catching memories in butterfly nets
basking in nature's soothing smile
any worries this place will surely forget

we'll sing the scores of the bluff and rivers, the hidden alleys and burnished brick,
cozy scarves over winter's shivers
as winds race through the valley, brisk

prisms play in the sprinkling fountains
lunge skyward and then throw arms back
we'll spend the days climbing mountains
our feet still know those well-worn tracks

I wrote this ode for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt #140 over at the Skeptic’s Kaddish. This week’s prompt was provided by Heather, who asks us to do the following:

Write an ode in praise of a person, place or thing.

This is an ode to one of my all-time favorite places, the city where I earned my bachelor’s degree, spent 5 years of my life, met my husband, and still visit for friends and family fairly often: La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Where are some of your favorite places?

  1. It seems there is so much to be thankful for. You make me want to visit! Some of your lines capture the qualities of a favourite place of mine… “knit our hearts together, under sunlight’s gaze we’ll stay awhile” just to mention a few.
