Picnic Mediation

in the shadow of our backyard, family surged
in the shadow of trees, a picnic emerged
in the shadow of the playset, children snickered
in the shadow of late afternoon, the daylight glittered
in the shadow of the unknown, we exchange glances
in the shadow of smoke, fire dances
in the shadow of fear, hope still catches

I wrote this poem for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt #144, hosted by David at the Skeptic’s Kaddish. This week’s prompt was provided by Jaideep, who provided a few elements to include in our poems:

  • THEME: Explore the contrast between light and darkness;
    • Use metaphor to reveal hidden truths or surprising insights;
  • FORM: Each line must begin with the phrase “In the shadow of…”
  • LENGTH: Exactly 7 lines;
  • TONE/IMAGERY: Create vivid imagery that evokes a sense of mystery or revelation;
    • Aim for a narrative arc that transitions or oscillates between themes of obscurity and clarity.
