The Pinecone’s Story

This bench holds yesterday's stories, and tomorrow's unspoken truths.
I guard it like a sentry,
the protector of the youth.

I've watched this waterfall splash
and splatter every single day;
I've winked at illegal skateboarders,
smiled at children who skip and play.

I cast freckled shadows across the ground
and let myself dance within the breeze,
when I finally land upon the bench,
I still feel at home among the trees.

I wrote this poem for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt #153. This week’s prompt was provided by Lesley, who asked us to do the following:

Monologue Poem Prompt

Write a monologue poem in which a character—historical, fictional, or original—takes center stage. Step into their voice and let them speak. Who are they, and whom are they addressing? Reveal their personality through their words, tone, and actions.

📍 Set the Scene – Your character must be seated on a bench. It could be a park bench, a courtroom seat, a workbench, or even the dreaded school “naughty bench.”

🤫 Use Subtext – What remains unsaid is just as important as what is spoken. Let hidden emotions or unspoken truths add depth.

🎭 Engage the Audience – Though alone, their words should feel directed at someone or something—whether a specific listener, a memory, or the universe itself.

💥 Finish Strong – End with a revelation, a twist, or a lingering thought that leaves an impact.

  1. Sarah, your poem is enchanting. Your bench takes on the character of an observer and keeper of life’s fleeting moments. I adore the lines:

“I cast freckled shadows across the groundand let myself dance within the breeze,”

The lines “I’ve winked at illegal skateboarders, smiled at children who skip and play.”are just as endearing as your accompanying photograph of the kids enjoying the view from your characterful bench.Your closing line offers a perfect conclusion of harmony and stillness, with the bench (main protagonist) belonging naturally among the trees. It makes me want to sit on this bench and gaze at the waterfall!
