The Last Train Whistle

History loosens the thread 
holding us together,
until it unravels,
slipping
down beyond
the space that held our thoughts.
It trickles
beneath remnants of
the trestle bridge
that once carried
towards the
dream of possibility
counterhinged in history,
until the train whistle's
last call.
