Sweetness grows where the waterfall flows,
beckoning arms of foamy spray,
plummeting over rocks in carefree leap
and sparkling with sun's blessing,
splashing fierce in bold whirlwind,
dancing and twirling to reveal
buried treasures of rock and debris
or unguarded hopes and dreams
or a mix of both in its watery tempest
and then to surface amidst tranquility,
churning that dims to bubbles
and basks in still serenity
I wrote this poem for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt #175. This week’s prompt was provided by Sadje, who asks us to think about imagery:
This week’s challenge invites participants to write a poem — in any form they prefer — centered on imagery.
Imagery in poetry is the use of vivid language that appeals to the senses. It allows readers not only to understand a poem but to experience it as though they can see, hear, smell, taste, or touch what is being described. Poets often use similes, metaphors, and precise sensory detail to “show, not tell,” creating a more immersive experience.
Writers are encouraged to choose a subject that feels closest to their heart. Whether the theme is joyful, painful, or deeply personal, authentic feeling paired with sensory imagery will make the poem resonate.
For more on the use of imagery in poetry, see this short article: Imagery in Poetry.
My Spotify playlist started recommending the band Mt. Joy, and I have to say I’m not displeased. “Lemon Tree” has become one of my new favorite songs, and I think it fits this prompt well. It’s about connections with others, and imagery is a powerful way we can connect through our writing. Enjoy!

So joyfully the water leaps and bounces over the rocks and pebbles. A beautiful poem Sarah.

Sarah, the way you describe the waterfall’s “carefree leap” into “still serenity” really carries me through the motion of the water in my mind…
