Patterned square of softest cloth, trimmed in lace with shimmering red and amber spirals gently wroth with sewing machine-care, I dread to leave your side. I need to sing you my worries in off-key tune, to trace the glittered bling as we share a dance beneath the moon. Your thin fabric, the luminescent eye into my soul, catching tears and nurturing my nose, you know my cry, beloved kerchief, holder of my hand.
This week’s Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt is from Michelle:
- Take out your handkerchief (yes, the one in your pocket right now- no cheating).
- Remember that during the Renaissance period, a handkerchief was considered to be a powerful symbol of a woman. Giving this item to a woman meant true love, honesty, commitment, and righteousness.
- If by chance you don’t have a handkerchief, explore your creative side and imagine you are holding one right now.
- Write an ode to your handkerchief (or make-believe handkerchief). Make it sound like a love ode.
I don’t carry a handkerchief, but I do have a creative side. A creative side that is shivering in this never-ending Midwest winter. I felt compelled to get a bit goofy with this one. It was partially inspired by my favorite Scottish alternative band, Franz Ferdinand, whose CD I recently re-discovered in a pile of my old stuff in our garage and have been listening to as I grade essays this afternoon. Their lyrics are often a bit tongue-in-cheek. This is one of their slower tunes off that 2006 CD:

It holds your hand. Love it 😍 👏 🤧 and your nose too, maybe. Sweet. Xo

Hi Sarah,
The pictures you share, they inspire me to see things differently and within a wide perspective. I feel them.
Reading your poem with and without context hardly makes a difference.
Because your voice, words and the expression remains the same.
I hope you keep enjoying your creativity.
As a history student, knowing, “Remember that during the Renaissance period, a handkerchief was considered to be a powerful symbol of a woman. Giving this item to a woman meant true love, honesty, commitment, and righteousness” is a new fact to me.
Thanks for sharing all the good hopes, wishes and feelings.✨✨

Sarah ~ I love how it’s the holder of your hand, rather than you holding it…
