Winter’s Hope

the wintry world bathes
in cold sunlight for mere hours
before evening's shadows overtake--
the wind spiraling snowflakes
across county roads
like the veils of ghost brides,
howling like the lover lost,
the tire tracks fading
the farther we part from humanity
leaving streetlights in the rearview
until the morning's brilliance scours the pavement clean, and we can breathe

Hi, all! I am honored to have been chosen as the Poet of the Week for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt over at the Skeptic’s Kaddish. Thanks go out to David for hosting this fun writing community each week and Suzanne for selecting my little poem. Here is the prompt that I created:

  • Write a poem of up to 12 lines on the theme of hope or renewal;
    • Poets can use this image (or another one) of a phoenix for inspiration if they like:

The phoenix has always inspired me, and I had a plan to get a phoenix tattoo on my arm after finishing cancer treatment. My husband even talked with this cool artist a few years ago who did an amazing local mural of a phoenix. Unfortunately, that artist moved onto other, bigger and better things than designing a tattoo for a random woman he met at a small-town event, and my arm is still tattoo-less to this day.

  1. Sarah, your poem paints such a vivid and moving picture of winter’s quiet power. The imagery of snowflakes as veils and tire tracks fading into shadows is haunting.

    Your resilience and connection to hope shine through so clearly 🌟

    Much love,
    David
