History loosens the thread
holding us together,
until it unravels,
slipping
down beyond
the space that held our thoughts.
It trickles
beneath remnants of
the trestle bridge
that once carried
towards the
dream of possibility
counterhinged in history,
until the train whistle's
last call.
I wrote this poem for the Wea’ve Written Weekly prompt #164, which was provided by Sheila. She asks us to write about the following:
What remains.Β It might be something tangibleβa physical object recovered from ruin. Or something intangible: the loyalty of a lifelong friend, or a memory that somehow outlasts the forgetting.
Loss may be arbitrary, but what remains often feels distilledβessential.
For this prompt, letβs shape our reflections into aΒ quadrilleβa 44-word poem with no required rhyme or meter. This unique form was originally created at the dβVerse Poets Pub, where poets gather weekly to distill thought and feeling into brief, potent verse.

Sarah, great minds think alike… I am afraid that someone has place some dynamite on that trestle and soon the bridge and train will come down…

Sarah the bombing of Iran is an act that is just begging for retaliation. I really hope cooler heads prevail. I really don’t want to end up in another war – especially one that comes to our shores!!

Wow. these words really resonate with me, Sarah.
This phrase feels like it holds the tension of inherited hope and collapse in just a few syllables.
Much love,
David
